This is not a distorted
image. Playing with the viewer, Good Vibrations Storage Unit by
Ferruccio Laviani combines contemporary and classical, whilst referencing to the digital, when creating his distorted piece of cabinetry. Laviani designed this piece for furniture brand Fratelli Boffi, known for their avant-garde
approach to classical forms within furniture. Laviani is part of a generation
of young Italian designers who came to prominence in the early 1990's when the
Memphis movement made its mark on international design.
The Good Vibrations storage unit was carved from oak using
a CNC machine. The success of this extraordinary piece of furniture lies in its
ability to question classical stylistic principles such as purity, cleanness
and symmetry, while evoking a comforting feeling of deja-vù, matched by
unquestionable craftsmanship. Good Vibrations is another addition to the
so-called New Aesthetic, a favorite art movement of Internet philosophers
characterised by themes of hacking and general digital malfunction as well as stressing
the material and physical processes in the making of visual art, Laviani wanted
to challenge the idea that glitches are solely found online, blending the virtual
and the physical.
Laviani's piece will be displayed at the Salone del Mobile
